2010 Half-handmade ShuiXian Wuyi Yancha

More Views

Produced from ~60 year old trees growing deep within the Wuyi Scenic Reserve (ZhengYan), this tea is is one of Master Huang's half-handmade productions from this year.

The leaves were hand-picked & withered, then bruised in a drum, with kill green and rolling being performed by machine. The final 2 roasts were performed by hand over charcoal in the traditional manner.

The roast is medium strength, with excellent flavour and endurance throughout the infusions. The mouthfeel, while excellent, doesn't reach the same level of refinement when compared to his fully handmade version.
  1. A solid tea but I prefer the RouGui Review by RC

This tea is a decent example of a good yancha but I find it a bit thinner and less complex than the RouGui. However I find that I typically prefer RouGui over ShuiXian so this may be a personal preference as opposed to anything specific to this tea. The leaf and aroma are good and the qi is similar (i.e. fairly strong) to the RouGui. You should really try both and decide for yourself. (Posted on 08/12/2011)

  2. Half-handmade ShuiXian Review by Sebastien

Very strong roasting taste, but which fades over the brews. Then appears nice mineral, fresh and fruity aromas, and an amazing aftertaste. This tea must become excellent after aging a little. (Posted on 26/11/2011)

  3. very good tea Review by Eugene

I liked this one a lot. I mainly purchased it as an experiment to compare it to the hand-made version, which is my favourite rock tea so far, and the result of experiment was surprisingly good. The tea has a good complex taste and while the taste is slightly less complex and harmonic and smell is slightly more strong/rough (roasted) when compared to full hand-made version, the tea is extremely good. 4. For later drinking Review by edp

I have tried a sample of this this morning, using my DHP clay to absorb the charcoal smells that I had on dry leaves, which was too strong for me.

What I obtain in the smelling cup is interesting and moving, but I really don't like the taste of this Shui Xian. I think that this is the most roasted I've tried, and it should benefit to be drank in about 5 years. But I think this is a good choice for later, because of its qi and good smells in the smelling cup. (Posted on 14/09/2011)

  5. a little rocky still Review by David J

This tea has a lot of the things that I look for in a good tea. A complex flavor profile & nice qi. It has a great base but when I drink it I don't see it as finished. I enjoyed the 2007 much more and I think this will evolve into a very nice tea given time to soften it up a bit. I felt it was a little rough still, but I have lately been on a strict diet of aged teas so my view on this is from that perspective. (Posted on 07/09/2011)
