2010 Half-handmade RouGui Wuyi Yancha

More Views

This excellent Wuyi Rock Oolong comes from trees deep within the Wuyi Protected Reserve (Zheng-Yan).  The trees are around 60 years old, growing naturally without the use of any chemical fertilisers or pesticides.

This tea is 'Half Handmade' - it is picked by hand & withered, then bruised in a drum, machine kill green & rolled, then given 2 medium/strong charcoal roasts by hand & with the stems also being removed by hand..

The flavour is excellent.  The flavour of the roast is still quite stong, but will continue to mellow and evolve over the coming years.  The rich roasted flavour with chocolatey plum tones gives way through the infusions to reveal a smooth, rich 'rock' flavour & sensation (YanYun) that should be the hallmark of an excellent yancha.

  1. My favorite EoT Yancha Review by RC

This is my favorite EoT yancha although the Lao Jun Mei is rather good albeit at almost 2.5 times the price. This tea is a much better value and is better value than the full handmade versions. The leaf is mostly whole, the fragrance is great, with a medium roast. The taste is complex and hui gan are also very good. I also notice a rather strong qi. I prefer this over the Shui Xian. 2. Delicious Roasty Yancha Review by DBJ

    2010 Rou gui half-handmade

The fragrance of the dry leaves is excellent. As I opened the bag I was first hit by a wave roasty yancha smell but, as that receded a bouquet of tangy fruit and hints of cinnamon became present. The leaves themselves are very whole, long and healthy looking. The aroma in the cup is great creamy fruit. I notice the qi of this tea on the third sip, energizing my body and focusing my mind.
The roast seems very good for this yancha, highlighting the flavor rather than overpowering it, but then again I have come to enjoy more roasted teas.

As the infusions build the roast settles, letting the tea shine through. IMHO this is the best of Master Huang's 2010 half-handmade teas offered. (Posted on 19/10/2011)

  3. Great taste but the roast is a bit too strong for me Review by Eugene

This leaves will brew into tea with very strong taste and flavor. The roast is strong but at the same time not over-burnt which results in great tea that combines strong main taste with an interesting variety of background tastes and aftertastes. If you enjoy more-roasted teas, this is probably a must-check item! (Posted on 13/09/2011)
